Flanders, 1935. When the antichrist Frans Martens senses that his days are numbered, he sends his daughter Virginie to Father Moens with a request to administer the last rites. The ultra-conservative Moens refuses, but under pressure from his ecclesiastical superior, he has to agree to the man's request, even though Moens believes that God cannot punish the man enough for his way of life. When Frans Martens dies a few days later, Moens refuses to bury him because his daughter does not have the money to pay for the funeral service.
