Romesh Sharma

Romesh Sharma (born July 27, 1947) is an Indian director, producer, and actor with a career spanning over five decades. Born in Kalimpong and educated at McGill University, he made his screen debut in Conrad Rooks’ Siddhartha (1972) before establishing the Moving Picture Company and Romesh Films. He earned widespread critical acclaim for directing the investigative political thriller New Delhi Times (1986), winning the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a Director at the National Film Awards. Alongside producing commercial Bollywood hits such as Amitabh Bachchan’s Hum (1991) and Diljalaa (1987), Sharma gained international recognition as a documentary filmmaker. He co-directed and produced the Emmy-nominated HBO documentary The Journalist and the Jihadi: The Murder of Daniel Pearl (2006), directed Ahimsa: Gandhi: The Power of the Powerless (2021), and served on the Caméra d'Or jury at the Cannes Film Festival.
