Sample review · Singin’ in the Rain makes difficult things look conversational. The rhythm is in the dialogue and bodies, not just the songs. I love a musical that finds comedy inside the craft it is celebrating. I tend to notice the sound before the plot.

Sample review · Fury Road has the shape of a piece of music: recurring motifs, sudden changes of pace and a clear sense of build. The sound design keeps the machinery distinct. Best watched loud, with the neighbours considered. I like a film that leaves room to think.

Sample review · Blade Runner 2049 is a fascinating balance of huge sound and empty space. The interiors make people look small without making them irrelevant. Its images have stayed with me more clearly than most of the plot. A memorable setting can sell me on almost anything.
