Sample review · The Iron Giant pairs a huge silhouette with such gentle physical acting. The ordinary conversations are what make the larger ideas work. Still one of my favourite arguments for animation’s emotional range. The performances are what draw me back.

Sample review · Fantastic Mr. Fox has the lovely unevenness of things made by hand. The tiny movements and clothes are a delight, but the family friction stops it becoming just a beautiful object. Autumn viewing, obviously. I tend to notice the sound before the plot.

Sample review · Paddington 2 makes kindness active rather than sentimental. So many jokes are planted with care and paid off with even more care. I like how much the film believes a neighbourhood can change. I like a film that leaves room to think.
